Those over-romantic scenes where couples met the last minute prior to one of them boarding a plane that was going to drift them apart forever are not realistic in the post-9/11 world; but the fact that people weren’t as dependent on technology as these days is another common factor that leads to thousands of believable stories in series, movies, and soap operas. It wasn’t as easy as to check the latest updates on social media networks, or reach somebody when they left their home/office, as cell phones were just a novelty. Fortunately for those who love to watch movies online, most 90s films are available on the net. Here are 10 iconic 90s movies that any movie fan has to watch at least once in their lifetime!
1. Pulp Fiction
Probably the definition of a “Cult Movie”; and the truth is that this Tarantino masterpiece is one of those movies that can make you laugh without even needing to ask the audience to do it. Witty humor at its best, with an amazing cast: the perfect combo for a Saturday evening.
2. Home Alone
How can one forget the mischief caused by Macaulay Culkin when his parents weren’t around? The funny family film of a boy whose parents entirely forgot about him until they realize he wasn’t on the plane, and the adventures for keeping a pair of robbers outside his house.
3. Clueless
A must-watch for nostalgic millennial women, we can have a good laugh by watching Cher Horowitz and her entourage of Beverly Hills elite. An entertaining adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, which also leads to a television sitcom and series of books.
4. The Sixth Sense
An excellent thriller that sometimes can be even scarier than R-rated horror movies, the film tells the story of a boy named Cole Sear, who can see and talk to dead people, and his relationship with his psychologist (played by Bruce Willis), who tries to help him.
5. The Blair Witch Project
And here comes the origin of those scary found-footage films we tend to see at video stores. This indie movie tells the fictional story of three students who hike the Black Hills to film a documentary about the Blair Witch local legend. The students disappear, but a year later, footage is found, which happens to be the movie the viewer is currently watching.
6. Schindler’s List
It’s impossible not to mention this dramatic masterpiece by Steven Spielberg, based on the true story of German businessman Oskar Schindler and his role in saving over 1,100 prisoners from Jewish concentration camps. It’s a black and white movie to add extra drama and place the user in the era the story is being told; you won’t regret this choice.
7. Fight Club
For many, this is one of the best Brad Pitt movies worth seeing. It’s a cult film based on the novel Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk that tells the story of a man who doesn’t find the meaning of existence in modern life. He then comes across someone who understands his problem and introduces him to the underworld of fights for “feeling.” An inspiring movie, with many lessons on materialism and emotional detachment.
8. The Matrix
Who can forget the boom that The Matrix was when released at 1999? Showing what people imagined the future to be like, computer hacker Neo sets his journey to fight cyber-tyrants of an alternate dimension, with some cutting-edge made action scenes. This role rewarded Keanu Reeves with fame and acknowledgment as an A-List actor.
9. Goodfellas
Rated as one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies, you can watch a stellar performance by Robert De Niro in a classically organized crime set in 60’s-70’s New York, with a good component of Italian-American mobsters, as many other films covered this topic during the 80s and 90s (most of them starring De Niro).
10. The Silence of the Lambs
Last but not least, this Academy-Award winning performance by Anthony Hopkins is just breathtaking! Based on Thomas Harris’ novel The Silence of the Lambs, it tells the story of a former psychiatrist – now convicted cannibalistic serial killer – Dr. Hannibal Lecter, and his relationship with young FBI trainee, Clarice Starling (played by Jodie Foster), in a gruesome Drama/Thriller.
Other notorious films (some of them award-winning) worth mentioning are Titanic, Se7en, The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Forrest Gump, Edward Scissorhands, and The Usual Suspects.
